KIM SANDOVAL
Artist, Herpetologist, Mathematician
I am a first-generation Mexican American college graduate from Brownsville, Texas. My primary mediums of work are oil painting, video art, and analog photography as different ways to explore my autohistoria-teoria. Brownsville is an inherently political city, being the closest to the US-Mexico Border, and having the wall cut through its city limits. In my work, I highlight my everyday Brownsville experiences using not the border wall, but the local landscape, snakes, classical iconography, and visual quotations, referencing art history, to highlight the lack of representation in our art canons.
“We are forced (or choose) to live in categories that defy binaries of gender, race, class, and sexuality. Living in intersections, in cusps, we must constantly operate in a negotiation mode”
